The Last Five Years
The Last Five Years is an off Broadway musical written and composed by Jason Robert Brown. The show was presented by Oxi Morons Theatre Company at Alphabetti Theatre.
Description
I co-directed this production which follows Cathy and Jamie, a couple in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. Their relationship is told through an unconventional structure where Cathy tells her story backwards while Jamie’s story is chronological and the two characters meet only once in the show.
This unusual structure provided an interesting point of interpretation. Our show was intentionally stripped back, reflected in the musical style as well as the set design. We used polaroid imagery to represent where the characters are in the chronology of their story. The black and white set design highlighted the two main characters who appeared at all times in colour. We also incorporated projection and video to show additional aspects of the characters’ lives. The show ran for five dates offering an intimate evening of emotional song and story-telling.
