York Theatre Royal Residency

York Theatre Royal spent two years in residency at the National Railway Museum while their building was closed for refurbishment.

Description

I oversaw several aspects of this project during the residency including three major productions as well as learning and engagement activity. To host the productions an entire auditorium was built on site at the National Railway Museum called the Signal Box Theatre.

In Fog and Falling Snow was a devised piece based on the museums archival collection co-directed by York Theatre Royal and Pilot Theatre. The show featured a community cast of 200 people and took place within the museum around the collection of locomotives

During Takeover Festival the museum’s October half term programme was handed over to a team of young theatre makers to create their own public programme, working alongside professional mentors.

The theatre’s famous Christmas Pantomime starring Berwick Kaler was staged in the unique Signal Box Theatre.

Theatrical blockbuster The Railway Children was restaged for audiences in York and featured a live steam engine.

Arts Council England provided funding to support collaborative learning for both organisations throughout the period of the residency.
